Welcome Back!

Welcome Back Math Spies!
I hope you had a restful and relaxing vacation.
There are two things to remember about this site.
1. The posts are not in order.  You should start on the missions page and find the next scenario you have not completed.
2.  Take good notes on each problem.  You will use what you learn in one problem to solve another problem.

The latest case is about Col. Chaos.  Study his picture in case you run into him.
Best of luck Math Spies!

The Isle of Pi #1

In an undisclosed location off a natural island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean is a man-made island where we believe Col. Chaos is hiding.  This island is perfectly round.  It has a road all around the edge of the island and one that crosses through the center of the island.  At this center is a perfectly round building with a parking garage underneath so that you may travel from one side of the island to the other. (See map below.)
The area of the Isle of Pi is about 3.14 square kilometers.  How far is it from the bridge to the center of the garage that is also the center of the island?
a. 2 km
b. 1 km
c. There isn't enough information.

The Isle of Pi #2

The road across the island travels in a straight line through the parking garage underneath the fortress.  What is the distance from the bridge to the dock?
a. Not enough information
b. 4 km
c. 2 km

The Isle of Pi #4

If you want to travel from the bridge to the dock, but you don't want to go through the garage under the fortress, how much farther do you need to go?

a. 2 km
b. 1.14 km
c. 4.28 km

The Isle of Pi #3

What is the distance along the road that goes around the edge of the island?

a. 6.28 km

Episode 2 Coming Soon

Pack your bags, Math Spies.  It's time to take a trip.
Have you seen this man?
He was responsible for Sludge and Smudge and their introduction to organized crime.  Be on the lookout for him.  He is very dangerous.

Message from the Director

Welcome to Math Spies!

If you stumbled on this blog by accident, you will soon see that it isn't an ordinary blog.  An ordinary blog is organized with the newest messages first.  This blog is a recruiting tool for Math Spies, a secret organization that uses the principles of math to defeat chaos everywhere.  To begin training to see if you are cut out for this secret organization, go to the page marked Missions -- Start Here.  There you will find seven scenarios to solve to see if you have the kind of skills we are looking for.

Maybe you didn't find us by accident.

Good luck, Recruit!

Signed,

The Director

A Miscalculation #1

This calculator was purchased at Evergreen Office Supplies.  Smudge reprogrammed it so it gives incorrect answers.  Here are some sample answers:

20 ÷ 2 = 18

18 ÷ 2 = 16

18 ÷ 3 = 15

15 ÷ 3 = 12

What will happen when you enter 16 ÷ 4 = ?

A Miscalculation #2

This calculator was purchased at Evergreen Office Supplies.  Smudge reprogrammed it so it gives the following answers:
5 - 1 = 6
5 - 2 = 7
5 - 3 = 8
6 - 1 = 7
What will be the answer if you enter 4 - 3 = ?

a. 7
b. 8
c. 9

A Miscalculation #3

This calculator was purchased from PDQ Drug Store. Sludge reprogrammed it so it gives incorrect answers:
2 x 2 = 14
2 x 3 = 16
3 x 2 = 16
3 x 3 = 19

What will happen when you enter 4 x 2 = ?
a. 19
b. 18
c. 17

A Miscalculation #4

This calculator was purchased from PDQ Drug Store.  Sludge reprogrammed it so it gives incorrect answers:
1 + 2 = 5
2 + 3 = 8
1 + 3 = 7
2 + 2 = 6

What will this calculator show when you enter 3 + 3 =
a. 8
b. 9
c. 10
